November Book Club

November 18th, 2008 at Dena Hott's House

Fall book club and Leigh's baby book shower! Here is a summary of the book:

"A family's conflict becomes a battle for life and death in this gripping and original first novel based on family history from a descendant of a condemned Salem witch. After a bout of smallpox, 10-year-old Sarah Carrier resumes life with her mother on their family farm in Andover, Mass., dimly aware of a festering dispute between her mother, Martha, and her uncle about the plot of land where they live. The fight takes on a terrifying dimension when reports of supernatural activity in nearby Salem give way to mass hysteria, and Sarah's uncle is the first person to point the finger at Martha. Soon, neighbors struggling to eke out a living and a former indentured servant step forward to name Martha as the source of their woes. Sarah is forced to shoulder an even heavier burden as her mother and brothers are taken to prison to face a jury of young women who claim to have felt their bewitching presence. Sarah's front-row view of the trials and the mayhem that sweeps the close-knit community provides a fresh, bracing and unconventional take on a much-covered episode. "

Hopefully we can all make it - if you have a book to loan bring one. Bring a special baby or child's book for Leigh - she is due Nov. 21st so she may not make it, but we can always bring them to her after the birth of Tatum!!!! Check out the ever-growing baby Prosser:

So, we seem to be busy!

OK ladies! It seems while several of us are available on Tuesday the 30th, several are not. Tuesdays are out in October for Leigh and her bump. Katie remind us of your class dates. Sara is a travelin fool....
I am all for a get together on the 30th - we can just hang out and chat about whatever. As for the true book meeting we will have to find a good date in October.
I also think we should be swapping books. Bring a few to each meeting and we can all get a new book or two to read. Really I think it's fun to do this with clothes and accessories too - as kids are born and we grow and shrink and regift it is something I have always wanted to try.
In the meantime:

Les news!

Lesley has given birth!!! Check out her blog to see all about miss tilda.

You should have received an invite to the Krezel Fall Fest - hope to see you all there!

The weather - it needs its very own line. We will need to meet outside on the 30th!

Meeting Anyone?

OK, I have the go ahead from Alicia to plan for the next meeting. (sara?)

Tuesdays that are up for grabs are: September 23rd, September 30th, October 7th. Do we still want to do the 4th book from Twilight? Who is finished, who needs to borrow it?Let's get a discussion going ladies!!

Also, who has or wants to read The Red Tent for our next selection. I want to re-read it and it is a great discussion book. This fall marks the 10th anniversary of its publishing and I think it has great topics - love, childbirth, sisterhood, family....with a woman on the ballot it will be even more intriguing!

Another recommended book is also The Saving Graces. It inspired my aunt's women's group, has my mom starting one, and is an easy read for the beach or the bedroom.

Amazon.com Review: The red tent is the place where women gathered during their cycles of birthing, menses, and even illness. Like the conversations and mysteries held within this feminine tent, this sweeping piece of fiction offers an insider's look at the daily life of a biblical sorority of mothers and wives and their one and only daughter, Dinah. Told in the voice of Jacob's daughter Dinah (who only received a glimpse of recognition in the Book of Genesis), we are privy to the fascinating feminine characters who bled within the red tent. In a confiding and poetic voice, Dinah whispers stories of her four mothers, Rachel, Leah, Zilpah, and Bilhah--all wives to Jacob, and each one embodying unique feminine traits. As she reveals these sensual and emotionally charged stories we learn of birthing miracles, slaves, artisans, household gods, and sisterhood secrets. Eventually Dinah delves into her own saga of betrayals, grief, and a call to midwifery.
"Like any sisters who live together and share a husband, my mother and aunties spun a sticky web of loyalties and grudges," Anita Diamant writes in the voice of Dinah. "They traded secrets like bracelets, and these were handed down to me the only surviving girl. They told me things I was too young to hear. They held my face between their hands and made me swear to remember." Remembering women's earthy stories and passionate history is indeed the theme of this magnificent book. In fact, it's been said that The Red Tent is what the Bible might have been had it been written by God's daughters, instead of her sons. --Gail Hudson --

From Library Journal: Skillfully interweaving biblical tales with events and characters of her own invention, Diamant's (Living a Jewish Life, HarperCollins, 1991) sweeping first novel re-creates the life of Dinah, daughter of Leah and Jacob, from her birth and happy childhood in Mesopotamia through her years in Canaan and death in Egypt. When Dinah reaches puberty and enters the Red Tent (the place women visit to give birth or have their monthly periods), her mother and Jacob's three other wives initiate her into the religious and sexual practices of the tribe. Diamant sympathetically describes Dinah's doomed relationship with Shalem, son of a ruler of Shechem, and his brutal death at the hands of her brothers. Following the events in Canaan, a pregnant Dinah travels to Egypt, where she becomes a noted midwife. Diamant has written a thoroughly enjoyable and illuminating portrait of a fascinating woman and the life she might have lived.

Happy Birthday Katie

Katie's birthday is this weekend and we will be celebrating at, where else, Wild Wing and enjoying the musical stylings of Flux capacitor. Love you Kate!!!

Prayer, good thoughts, good mojo

Please keep Lesley in your thoughts this week. Not only is she days away from her due date but her husbands father is ill, so their family has to fight between the happy anticipation of this time and being needed in a different way in Mississippi. Lif brings us so many challenges at once and I am very lucky to have all of you to call on when needed. Lesley - we are here for you if you need anything.
